Hi all. I am hoping that someone will be able to shed some light on this medallion.

It appears to be a 1902 Edward VII Coronation medallion, but all my Google searches have so far not found any trace of this version.

It lacks a country of origin anywhere on it, but it may be from India as it was my late father-in-law's, who was from there.

The outer rim is smooth and there is no indication of any mount having been fixed to it.

Appreciate any assistance in identifying this medallion.

Cheers

Here is one I found. Not much info though, looks like one of the Coronation medals.

Listed in Royal Commemorative Medals 1837 - 1977 Volume 4. King Edward VII 1901-1910 by John Cumbers and Andrew Whittlestone. (Second Edition, published by Galata, 2017).

They record five varieties:

1 32mm, white metal (Very common)
1a same but holed with a suspender (scarce)
2 32mm, bronze (common)
2a same holed [presumably also found with a suspender] (common)
3 32mm, silver (rare)

It is listed as being made by J. Moore as the initials J.M. are found on the truncation of some specimens.

A final piece of trivia on this piece: it is one of numerous "wrong date" accession medals for Edward VII.

He was due to be crowned in June 1902, as this medal attests. However, two days before the ceremony, he came down with appendicitis. Back then, this was usually fatal, but they decided to go ahead with some then-experimental surgery to try to save his life. The surgery was successful and the king recovered quickly, but not quickly enough to carry on with the planned ceremony. His coronation was rescheduled to 9th August. Too late for the manufacturer of this medal, though.

There are some coronation commemoratives that come in both "wrong date" and "correct date" versions.
