Hi all,

I got into metal detecting recently and have been enjoying it so far. After hunting my yard and a couple of hiking trails in my town I have a about a buck fifty in modern pennies, nickels, and clad. While I'm happy to find any coins at all (it beats cans and nails) like many of you I'm after something a bit older. So I wondered, what would you say your ratio of keepers to clad found while metal detecting? For my purposes, a keeper would be any coin older than 1960 and/or one that is made of precious metals. What do you all think based on your experience?

If you had asked me this question eight years ago or so, it would've been maybe 4:1 clad to keeper. I scored hundreds of old silvers and other keepers in my first three years, I really cleaned up the 'pounded' parks. Nowadays, it more like 100:1.

It all depends on where your detecting . If your swinging that coil in new parks or playgrounds all you would find is modern coins ( junk ). But if you hit old school grounds or any land that is 75 years OLD or older , that's where you'll find the good stuff ,IHC, wheats , Silver , etc .

Yeah I been hitting up my place and grammas place. Both areas are recent to my knowledge. My place around 70s I wanna say and gmas around 50s. Plenty of modern coins and junk.
Couple Lincolns from 60s at gmas so just hoping for that silver!
About 25:0 with few times I've been out swinging maybe 10 times each time I find couple coins.

I can't say I've scouted the dirt a hole lot in recent years, but when I first started about ten years ago I did find a sparkling Mercury dime, IN MY OWN backyard. All other coins I've found have been clad (and lots of those were in just awful shape.
There are places I'd love to do to with my detector, but I consider those areas a bit 'unhealthy'. I'd probably leave the area with no scanner, no wallet, no car, and a knife in my belly.
