I found this 2015 D Jefferson nickel, can anyone tell me is this a variety or an error or a fluke...? I am new to all of this.

A right-side-up photo from a newbie, that's rarer than a 1913 V nickel! Agree with John that your coin has been heated, or maybe was buried in dirt for while.

It is some form of Environmental Damage.
You might be able to rub some of it off, depending
on what caused the damage.

The Nickel become like this in general and not specific when come in contact with Sulph or Sulphur S.

Environmental or intentional damage. Heat and/or rubbed in gun oil, either way it's post mint damage ( PMD).

On nickel the heat will give some blue reflex. Must be an environment source to change the color. Most is Sulphur or if it is sea proximity is no other questions.
