Could I get a verification that this Clodius Albinus denarius is real?

Look to be fine to me, but I'll let others chime in.

It is most likely authentic. The cracks and crevices in the coin appear to show an underlying bronze under the silver. If it is indeed bronze, that would make this an ancient fourree.

Not really seeing any bronze in this one, looks to be deposits that may or may not come off with some light cleaning.

The squarish irregularity on the edge looks like a casting sprue has been snapped away.

@Kushanshah, thanks for your comment, but, I have the piece that game of during shipment. It appears to be of the same metal type as the rest of the coin. The coin is thin on that side. I don't see any signs of casting, can you be more specific?

If you have the missing piece, then it's probably the result of brittleness which, while not a good thing, does suggest authenticity. Cast coins (and cast flans) often show evidence of where the channel for molten metal had once been, such as a sprue, break or file mark.

@travelcoin can you recommend a cleaning solution that would remove the tar spots?

Ruger, this was my last post about cleaning a denarius.

However, I would start with soaks in distilled water and then adding lemon juice. Sometimes the deposits are too difficult to remove without risking damage to the coin.

@ruger, just a thought here: if the silver has started to become brittle, then I might not do anything to this coin other than protect it from further damage (leave those encrustations). Also, if you add a close-up picture of the edge where that piece broke off, then we will know for sure if this is a fouree or not.
