For those that collect small 5 cents. Here are photos of 3 different 1888's. that I have. Is this and anomaly or do all 1888 have this die chip on the upper ball of the first 8?

Photo #1 looks like the first 8 took a hit, but looks like it also has that die chip on the first 8 and also has a (hat) on the last 8?
Any comments would be appreciated!

Thanks

MG

This is the only example of a 1888 5 cent that I have in my collection that comes close to your photo #1. I have "head phones" to your "hat".

I looked through my 88's then some of the other years. On the ones with clear enough 8's, I found the same thing for 1883-7-9.
It looks to me like the 8 was repunched with a 3 punch. Looking at the 8's on 188-'s, they start off looking the same but some get fat, and the centre holes are different shapes. The ball on the top of a 3 would make the small semi-circle that's in the left 8, and the little ridge on the 8.
If someone has a program that can overlay a 3 from 1883 over an 8, it would helpful.

Viper good eye on picking this up but I don't really think it's anything special.
The anomaly inside the top loop of the first 8 is on all of the coins shown so far and I checked the three that I have and it 's present on all of mine also.
Hope this helps.

Cheers, Bill

Thanks Hounddog Bill!
With all 3 that I had and every one had the Die Chip in the upper ball of the first 8, I kind of figured that all 1888 must of had that Die Chip.
That answered my question.

If it's on all the coins from different dies, then it's not a die chip. It had to be that part of the 8 on the hub what chipped off (like a letter on a typewriter key)so that the first 8 was just struck like that. That's if any of you can remember a typewriter.
