Can you guys shed some light on this please: is this a bare belly beaver? or bare beaver or whatever it is called? He/ she has a ton of hair missing on the beaver body. there is literally no hair on a large area.... and, it is definitely not from wear and tear of the coin. (i guess a MS65+) maybe Beavers use Gilette razors? Thanks guys H

Beautiful photos, however it would not be classified as a bare belly, that portion of the beaver is fairly high so my guess would be wear.

I think this was due to a strike trough grease. I must be wrong but I do not see a 65.

I may be old school but I don't think this coin would have ever been MS65 the strike is just to weak. This coin was struck with old dies and weakly at that. Compare your coins obverse with a coin that was fully struck. The more serious problem with your coin is the rust that is developing in multiple spots, common on a lot of these steel plated coins. the key question is not the strike and how well it is struck. the question is the missing hair issue. And, it is not for wear! Makes no difference to me if it is a 65, 66, or 62.or whatever... it is the missing hair, just like on some nickels the bare belly... here it is a lot more.

just to be very clear again: this is not for grading. it is the missing hair/fur/pelt. mostly missing within the red square. The bare area is the same a very clean fields and without any marks. and,,, the brown spots are not rust. Had also doubts after it was mentioned, so I took a hawthorn and simply got it off. it is organic matter and NOT magnetic. just un-marked nickel under the brown matter. Hound dog bill, I can make my images look like yours by getting closer with the macro lens and then enlarge it. No problem, but that is not the issue here.

Believe me when I say I'm not trying to be difficult here but with the pictures you've supplied I stand by everything I posted in my initial response. Might I suggest you use your hawthorn and remove the organic matter then do take a closeup that does show the detail (reverse & obverse). I agree the missing hair is not from wear but is caused from the weak strike This is not the same as the bald belly coins.
Cheers, Bill Edited to remove portion of last line.

Almost all of the 53's in higher grades that I have are missing the details on the beaver, I assumed it was from wear. I do agree with Bill though, weak strike is a very good possibility also.

Weak strike as MANY of these are . Also coin is not Mint State anything . A rather typical pedestrian example in my opinion .

OK guys, I give up and believe you all.I have to add it to my experience. the coin in hand looks like a million...much better than the pictures.
Bill It would be way to much work to do all that. I would do it if it were a mule... But, thanks for your help.
