How to tell if the 1971 Kennedy half dollar you have was struck on a 40 percent silver planchet

Post photos of the coins edges , if its clad you should be able to see some of the copper . The chance of it being 40% silver are next to none . Weight should be different too .

I don't know if the tissue test works for 40% or not, but I would think a specific gravity test should give a fairly conclusive result.

If you know a jeweler, an XRF test should tell you. Weight of 40% silver Kennedy halves is not much above the clad issues — close enough that the tolerances overlap. Slicing between reeds with an Exacto blade might reveal the copper if it's being obscured by silver plating.

If it doesn't have an "S" mint mark then it has a copper core.

It does. The outside layers of a 40% silver coin are 80% silver.
