Just a curious question regarding this subject, but why is the SSN considered rare? I only ask because on more modern coins something like this nobody seems to have much interest in let alone refering to it as a variety.

Is it the age and the number of dies used for that year that makes it rare? Again, just a curious question from someone who doesn't collect pre-1920 too often.
Finding and discovering modern Canadian doubled die varieties since 2018.

For 1881, the Mint used the 1876 Obverse dies and ALL were single serif. All the 1876 dies to be used for 1881 were handpunched to make the 2 N's full serif. That is, all but one die and it's unknown how many were struck with that one die, but very few known.. 1881 is a great year for all kinds of varieties and this is, by far, the scarcest. You had Obv 1's, 1a's, 1a/1's and lots and lots of repunched letters, coupled with some hugely offset Machine Doubling evident.
