it's a die chip. This happens when a small area of the die is damaged as it is used and a small pit is created when a piece falls out of the die. This happens quite often so the coin doesn't command a premium. Die chips can vary in size, location and multiple chips can occur on a single coin. As noted above, all of the coins struck with a chipped die will have the same anomaly. It may even get larger as more coins are struck.
I do have some die chips that I've collected, but they aren't valuable. I collect die chip progressions of 4 or more coins from the same die, where the chip gets larger and larger.
