Im starting a circulation strike 3 cent silver set in xf to au condition. Does anyone have any good advice before I get too far into this project? I know 1863-1872 will give me fits finding them. People seem to be asking 1.5xs to 3xs grey sheet for these years online. Are these asking prices realistic? Thanks!

To be frank, GreySheet means nothing when you're dealing with either 3CN or 3CS, specifically in regards to the scarce dates. Dealers can charge whatever they want because they know people will pay it since there's very few ever on market at any given time.

My general advice to all starting a set of anything is to estimate the cost of your project BEFORE you start buying. Actual selling prices. Then decide: am I prepared to pay this cost?

A complete set in XF/AU should cost you around 17k-20k

slabbed or raw? if raw, be careful of slight bends

Better to stop at 1862 and call it a short set.

If you've got the money and time I think that's a pretty awesome set to put together
Unlike many I have always loved the design of the 3 cent silver

It's a great series and full of challenges. Depending on your budget, be prepared to settle for either damaged business strikes or proof strikes to fill holes for some of the harder years. That said, I think for this series it's less important to focus on getting every year and better to have fun with what comes along even if it means never fully completing it.

I'm looking for the more common coins in raw and 1863-1872 graded. I understand that the mintages of the last 10 years of circulation strikes are relatively meaningless as most of all years were melted. Mostly interested in knowing if there are any less known rarities and, in addition, anything in addition to bent coins to avoid.

Don't do it. You pay a fortune for minuscule coins you can barely see. On top of that, many of these coins have been AT toned.

Go to Heritage and you will see loads of AT 3CS coins.
