Hey,
first new coins in a long time, I got some uncirculated Franklin halves and trying to understand the bell lines. The example pics confuse me a bit... talking the left side of the bell at the crack, that seems to be a problem area. Should that have 3 lines in the upper, or 2, or ?

A pic, are these 'full' or 'nearly' or 'not even close' or ?
And the lowers, again left of bell area, what needs to be there? Many of the ones I see labeled as 'full' seem very iffy/weak...

Full Bell Lines refer to the lines on the bottom of the bell. This coin is not FBL

This is also a proof coin, not an uncirculated coin (well technically it is Unc but) and as such it doesn't receive FBL anyway

How do you decide that? Its from a roll, not a proof set?

I do have a FBL proof in an official set (I got it out and even thru the plastic I now see what it should look like better). This group has some handling marks, but are pure UNC.

this coin looks like a proof because of the fields. The surfaces are mirrored and don't show the luster associated with the metal flow on circulation strikes. Proofs are struck with highly polished dies and uses polished planchets.

Hmm. I wonder what they are... rejected proofs? I agree they are proof-like. Not sure what to do with them, really. They have a few tiny dings and average strikes, but all in all, very pleased.

I still haven't found a good way to take a pic of shiny large coins. I will try to post a few once I officially get these (checked out for return policy, but are a present to me for later).

Being slow on the uptake... they have no mint marks... can't be a reject proof either? Wouldn't those have an S? So they are just extra shiny UNC?

Starting in 1968. Before then all proof were minted in Philly and had no mint mark.

Ok. So now that my marriage is old enough to drink, and I can 'open' the present :)

on the closeups, you can see on this one:
the hair looks scratched, pass and stow are super mushy, and there are some very tiny scratches that you can catch in the light.

A designation that will always be debated. As for the third party graders, NGC seems to be stricter on them others.
