From a short hiatus, hello everyone. I've been unable to spend much free time at the computer lately, but I've missed being here and joining you all. I bought some coins in the last few months with a Christmas cash bonanza courtesy of all my relatives. Here is a dollar I won at an auction and which I sent to have graded and photo'd. More to come. I fixed your image names Stephen, Special characters ($) and spaces in the filename are a no-no. [:0] edited > LOL, you edited again to get it working right after I did. I deleted the other set of images from the server.

64 for sure, maybe 65. As 1928's go excellent strike. Appears to have decent luster which can also be a problem with 1928's.. Nice Coin!

It was graded AU58 by PCGS. I bought this coin at Stack's January auction as VERY CHOICE BU, with the note: "Just a tic away from GEM." I saw the coin before I bid, and agreed with VERY CHOICE - MS64 - but was under no illusions that it could be graded as a gem - MS65.

It is difficult to tell from the pictures if the areas that appear to have slight rub are actually looking that way due to the brilliance of the coin. The area that brought it down to an AU58 may have been the eagle's shoulder which looks slightly rubbed. At first glance it looks BU, but the grade you received made me look at it a lot closer.
Can you return it to Stacks?

The difference in value between 64 and 58 would make a re-submit worthwhile. If you dont have to use PCGS I would look elsewhere, it seems forum members have been getting beat up by PCGS. Myself, I only use ANACS because of the cost and ease of submission.

I'm one who recently got mauled by PCGS (see 90CC and 91CC Morgan threads below). If PCGS is going to make silver dollar grading even more subjective and restrictive than it has in the past and when compared with the other two or three top TPGs, then it's time to move to NGC or, under the new management of James Taylor, ANACS. I'm going with ANACS as soon as my current business with PCGS is concluded. Fred

I fully agree! As noted before I only use ANACS for now. Many of the local dealers at the shows that I do will use NCG which seem to be a little more consistent for them. I looked at some Morgan's in old green PCGS holders this weekend, and was surprised to see them over graded by at least a point. One of the reasons why I don't use TPG often is that it has been a rollercoaster cycle since the beginning from very tight to very loose, and you just don't know where you are going to get caught.

Well, I haven't tried, but I think probably not. I went and saw the lots. I'm a big boy. The only thing is, as a relative beginner, I tend to rely on descriptions - especially silver dollars. As a result, when I bid on this coin, it was described as Very Choice BU, and "just a tik or two away from gem." As I said, I made an appointment and viewed the lots I was interested in and chose this with confidence that the grade would hover somewhere around 64. The subtleties of Peace dollars make them hard to grade and so, even though I knew that their "grades" were only descriptions, I thought at least it would be Mint State. I mean, some of the graders at Stacks are former PCGS.
