I'm in California, US, and finally getting around to looking at some Austrian notgeld I inherited through my father.
I bought a copy of World Notgeld (2nd edition) and am trying to understand the book before sorting through my notgeld. Can anyone kindly tell me what "NO" and "OO" mean?
Does anyone have any great system for sorting their notgeld? Any suggestions on how to read rather the stylized printing to figure out what town has issued the notgeld?
As you can tell, I am at the beginning of this journey. I only wish my grandfather had told me about his collection when he was still alive.
OO is Oberösterreich (Upper Austria, capital city is Linz), while NO is Niederösterreich (Lower Austria, capital is now Sankt Pölten, used to be Vienna).
By "stylized printing", are you referring to the "gothic' or "black letter" font used? I suggest downloading this font from the internet and studying it a bit. You will eventually get used to it.
