2021 50 Cents (Queen Version), Obverse Struck Through Retained Grease?

JohnWayne007 Pillar of the Community Canada 1186 Posts	Posted 04/30/2021 5:39 pm For the past couple of weeks I had been looking at this set in the display case at my local post office debating on if I should buy it or not. Today I finally did and when I got home and started checking out some rolls I picked up from the bank I decided to put the set under the microscope as well. When I opened the cardboard flip the set sits in, I noticed the obverse on the 50 cent piece looked like it had some grease residue on the obverse, under the microscope I then noticed that it looks like it is embedded into the coin with very small ridges around the grease. I looked online to see if this type of error could happen and it turns out that apparently it can. My question for the error folk that are familiar with this type of error, is it what I think it is? The coin is still in the original packaging, so I went further and decided to try to "Smudge" the grease by lightly using my nail and seeing if it could move around while still being in the package but it did not budge at all. PS the weird look on the bottom left of the Obverse on the full photo is just the cellophane wrinkled from trying to push the grease around. JohnWayne007 Pillar of the Community Canada 1186 Posts	Posted 05/01/2021 11:00 am JimmyD, I have seen hardened grease look similar on a coin so thats just what I was comparing it to. In some areas there are little tiny pits that are rough with no grease/substance, so if I picked off some of the grease/substance (i dont plan to) I'm fairly certain there will be a rough surface with a minor indentation similar to what you find on a strike through. SP67 Valued Member Canada 234 Posts	Posted 05/03/2021 4:30 pm Recently I found similar coin with a clear strike through grease and with some black residue. The following image is a 5 cents 2020. We see some black spots at a couple location including the top of the beads. I found few other coins similar to that one. Report this Post to the Staff

So to a regular collector, it is a defective strike, and to an error collector, it is not defective enough... These are the kind of coins I use as "bonus coins" when ebay buyers purchase multiple error coins from me... not worth selling, but interesting enough not to send to the bank.
