This is a pretty interesting coin. It says 1980 but its really a 1981, it also says 82.

The "80" looks like its tripled or even quadrupled. Was it re-punched? Or is it all MD? or a combination of both.

There is also some doubling on the letters ANA of Espana.

Also which side is the obverse? the Head side? or the side that has the real date of the coin?

I was hoping that I would not have to be the first reply post on this one. I must say this one puzzles me. My first thought is that the doubling looks like Mechanical Doubling - possibly mixed with some Die Deterioration. But the upper loop of that 80 is so much thicker than the bottom loop (and the top of the '9' just beside it) that I almost think it could be some sort of repunch job. If it were mine, I'd keep it.

I was holding out to hear better opinions than my own.
It's certainly intriguing. If I had the coin to study, I would inspect the upper loops of 80 for overhanging metal.
Since there's a similar displacement in NA in ESPANA, I suspect MD--but I'm unsure.

I'm puzzled too. I just noticed something in the lower loop of the 8, and there is doubling of the dots next to the date as well. interesting coin.

Kurt, what do you mean by overhanging metal?

Hmm...well, if the "80" was pushed around due to damage, I think under high magnification you could spot some overhang on the inside of the loops where the date was pushed south. But, if there's no overhang or sign of coin metal being sheared, perhaps this was on the die? It's a puzzling, interesting coin.
