Not an error, just damage.
Looks like some of the copper plating has been removed exposing the zinc core.

Agree, post strike damage. Appears to be a Ridge Ring forming--die deterioration.

It also looks like someone took a ball peen hammer to the obverse in front of Lincoln. Notice the dual rounded dents on the obverse and the corresponding bulge on the reverse.
