Hi all,

I got this Japan 1 Mon - "Ko-Kan'eitsuho" old type, a while back. Numista lists about 14 variants of this coin. Can anyone help me in identifying the variant?

Here is the link to this coin in Numista :

I am not an expert.

But the #27704; character has what collectors call a "large hook". The center vertical stroke has a hook on the bottom that is so large it touches the stroke on the left.

In this case, it can possibly then be from the Hagi casting site, Nagato Province, Japan. Cast from 1637 to 1640.

Discussed in the JNDA 2009 catalog as coin number 11 on page 128. In the 2015 JNDA is is on page 140 and value is listed from 500 to 1500 yen depending on condition. So more than a few dollars.

David Hartill has it as coin number 4.27. Hartill does not give explicit prices, but it is described as a very common coin.

Robert Jones has it as coin number 157. Jones description also indicates the right leg on the #23539; extends below the center hole and the "dots" on the top of the #23539; and #23515; are small. These statements are all consistent with your image.

Unfortunately the test editor does not display Kanji characters I entered in my reply.

For clarity:
#27704 is the "ei" on the bottom of the coin,
#23539 is the "ho" on the right;
and
#23515 is the "kan" on the top.
