seems pretty unique due to its placement. (sorry about the pic quality. pretty hard to capture the error.)

Looks like a die gouge across the initials area.

it's definitely a "raised" area, I just couldn't capture that in the images. a die chip?

Nope a die gouge. A die chip is a portion that breaks off of the die. This leaves a void on the die. The void then fills in on the coins. making a blob that is raised on the coin. A die gouge is a deep scratch into the field on the die. Note how the FG is not affected, but the field area is. The incuse mark, leaves a raised area on the coin. The reason this can't be a doubled die, is that it doesn't match the design of the hub. The gouge looks like a double line. But still not a doubled die. Because..... It doesn't match the design of the hub.

oh ok. so the die is gouged rather than the coin. wasn't sure about which was the gougee. I didn't think that this was a doubled die. thanks

Correct. If it were a coin gouge, the mark would be incuse. But because it is raised, it is a die issue that was incuse on the die. (raised on the coin) Sometimes you have to think like a die to understand what they go through to create there coin children.

Maybe this will help:

The hubs look like coins:

Coins positive
Dies are negatives
Hubs are positive
Master die are negatives
Master hub positive.
Transferred off a positive example:
