Flat, shelf-like doubling. MD. No added value, sadly.

Machine doubling. After the strike, the machine altered some of the devices, often in a single direction, other times in several directions. Depending on how loose the machine was.

so, I assume that Mechanical Doubling really isn't that valuable in general?

It is common. It can happen on a normal die as well as a doubled die. The machine causes it, so it is common. Most variety collectors prefer doubled dies without the MD. The graders don't care. they just grade them as normal. But to a collector of varieties, they are often a deal breaker.

You see the hub doubling on the date, but note the yellow arrows. They are pointing to the single direction of the MD. (south on all of them, and different each strike) Most of this variety have MD. The 1968-1972 cents had a lot of Machine Doubling those years.

Not the location? You are looking on the outside edges of the devices. Look at the centers. This is Machine Doubling. Caused by the machine. On a doubled die, the doubling is on the die. And a doubled die can have Machine Doubling. Because it is caused by the machine. But Machine Doubling never makes a doubled die. Why? Because the hub doubling is on the die. A doubled die is created doubled. A normal die is just normal.

Look at the centers of the devices, not on the outside edges of devices. Normal and a DDR. Note the closed devices are even smaller in size, because of the enlargement of the devices.
