That is a Saudi Arabia 4 pounds KM-34. It was minted in 1945 for Aramco which previously had been known as SOCAL. Illegal in actuality as Aramco was an American oil consortium but the requirement of the Saudi Govt for payment in Gold for leases in the country forced the US Govt to secretly allow the Gold to be minted. Blanchards came across a pile of these coins in 1976 I think. Maybe 1978. The King of Saudi Arabia at the time was very Pro England, he was given the Order of Orange in 1937 by the Royal Family which solidified his "King" monicker for Saudi Arabia. Of course Bretton Woods and the new monetary system was being discussed at the time so no one knew who was going to carry the Global Reserve Currency. Fluctuations in currencies and banking issues were an issue so that did affect the decision for payment in Gold vs Currency. Apologies, for the long answer but I find this an intriguing story.
