The seam looks like a dead giveaway of a fake coin or joined coins. Where is the reeding? You didn't mention what kind of coin it is or the denomination.

well, I thought " Kennedy half" kinda summed it up, but 1984 D Kennedy half dollar.

I've come across a number of Kennedy halves with worn or smoothed reeds, possibly from casino overuse. Those same coins are often pretty scratched and dinged. Not sure about your edge gash, though.
