Have any of you exchanged world currency for U.S.? I'm wondering if it would be worth the effort. Exchange fees are in the 10-15 percent range it appears. Would local banks be a good resource?

I have acquired a good bit of world money and want to reduce the pile. I realize that much of what I have may be demonetized or worth very little, but I also have a lot of Euros, Canadian and British money. Doubtful I will visit any of those areas in the near future.

Interested in the process and any experiences forum members may want to pass along. TIA.

If you've got any Bank of England paper £20 notes, they are likely to be withdrawn from circulation in October, so I'd recommend that you change them before then. Officially, the paper £5 and £10 notes can now only be exchanged at the Bank of England, but some UK High Street banks will still change them.

On my visits to the USA, I've only ever exchanged sterling for dollars at the airport on arrival, usually just to get a few dollars for immediate spending. I've never tried going into a US city center bank to change sterling, though I tried once in Argentina and the notes might just as well have been from Mars!

A (local) bank will give better rates than an airport kiosk or the like. Of course, what currency the bank handles, whether they'll exchange currency for non-customers, and whether they handle foreign currency at all, is all up to them.

I've always spent down the local currency before leaving, and kept any remaining bits. The physical bills and coins are more meaningful to me than the few bucks I'd get in exchange.

Thanks for the info so far. I have some 1 pound Guernsey notes, euro coins and pound coins. Not sure if those are exchangeable?

I have used these kind of services here in Europe:

https://foreigncurrencyandcoin.com

It will be pricey if you send there every coin though. But if you pick the most valuable ones and do something else with the rest.

Thanks, again, to everyone. I'll check out the website and keep an eye out for 1962 pieces.
