Hello!

My neighbor came across this penny. It's a 1957 D Wheat penny but it looks like it's made from a silver metal rather than copper. It also looks like it's in extremely good condition for its age, which leads me to believe it sat in someone's collection for most of its life. Looking for info on whether this is an error. Also if it holds any significant value if it is collectible? Or am I dreaming and this is just a common error from that year/mint run? Thanks!!

I think it used to be fairly common. My granddad told me he used to do it as a kid.
I guess the mercury amalgamates with the metal, so it can easily be done without any equipment.

For future reference, it's best to avoid holding valuable or high-grade coins by the surfaces. The oils in your skin won't show up initially, but over time they'll corrode the metal and leave a fingerprint that can't be removed. This isn't worth more than a few cents, though, so no worries.

I agree, plated. You can see the plating wearing off. No premium I'm afraid. Worth 3 cent (bulk Wheaties wholesale going rate).

Aye, I'm thinking plated. I've come across a dozen or so plated 1950s wheat cents over the years. Not an error.
