Mirrors have been a great aid:

U.S. coins are rotated 180 different than the other side. Canadian and a few other countries are what they call medal alignment. That means that if you drilled a hole on the top, both sides would be normal looking. (U.S. coins would be rotated 180 degrees)

A cardboard 2x2 is what I use. Make sure one side is perfectly aligned when it is holdered. Flip it over and use your protractor to measure the degree of rotation.

Here's a handy gauge you can print out then cover it with clear packing tape for sturdiness.

I think OP may be asking about off center strikes, not rotated die errors, but I could be wrong.

This method should be fine. I don't think anyone worries about minor details like the difference in diameter between the planchet and the finished coin.

Note that you can't measure total diameter across the struck portion since the planchet expands.

Off center and rotation so both were what I was interested in... Awesome responses wow how great is that thanks for all your feedback and the images were great. I am very satisfied with the returned support on this... Thanks to all! The misalignment is what I will practice finding. Any ideas on easier methods anyone?
