As a kid in the early 80's my father and I collected coins applying a limited budget which was available at the time. My father focused on "filling the holes" in the albums, rather than the high grade coins. When my father passed away I decided to try and upgrade parts of the collection, while selling certain sets to purchase better pieces. I have since expanded to collect European Talers on account of the US coinage which I lost interest in. Nevertheless, I had recently decided to send to ANACS the better dates of the lower grade US coins to ensure authenticity and value. I just received the lot from ANACS. The decision point is what exactly do with these:
1) Keep 2) Sell 3) Aim to upgrade/trade in. You advice will be appreciated.

I see a lot of low grade 2 Cents with similar problems. It might be crazy but I enjoy putting together sets of them. I have a harder time completing sets of problem coins than sets of regular ones. Its more of a challenge and not so much of a strain on the budget.

Knowing that you collected these with you father is a powerful sentiment, so I say keep them and then pass them on to your children or grandchildren.

Quite a collection of keys. With that diverse an assortment you should have some wiggle room to sell whatever you don't fancy and upgrade those that you do. Congrats! nlp

If I were you I would keep them for sentimental reasons and to pass it down the line

I am debating whether the sentiment is to a specific coin or the the continuation and enhancement of the hobby and collection.

That is a great way to look at it!

I guess the answer might be to ask, "What would he have wanted to do?" Was he inclined to upgrade; was it something he would have done if the budget eventually allowed it? If so, then by all means continue his work!

This is not the only possible answer; just one way to look at it!

I think it's great that you and your father got to share the collector/collecting experience together. My two kids never showed the slightest interest in collecting. I think that as long as you still collect and have an interest in coins that your father would approve of whatever you decide to do. (And by the way, as one who basically only collects circ coins, I just wanted to say that those are really GREAT coins!)

Too bad you didn't give the 1892CC an acetone bath before sending it in- that probably would have removed all traces of the glue It is quite a nice collection of lower grade keys and in all likelihood, worth more than my entire collection of several hundred coins

As far as keeping or selling them- ask yourself if you have any emotional attachment to them. If you are fairly attached to them then keep 'em. Obviously, keeping them all would tie up alot of cash so you may also want to consider keeping a couple of them for sentimentality and then liquidating the rest so you can upgrade to some awesome high dollar unc Talers

I would keep them for the sentimental value. You might be able to make them into a family heirloom that could be passed down from generation to generation. If I were you, I would continue to add damaged keys to the set.

I own a few problem coins myself and the value is basically "what a specific buyer is willing to pay". If it doesn't bug them, then they will pay close to market value.
Cleaned is usually the least worry but I tend to stay away from "corroded", "damaged" or "whizzed". "Scratch" would depend on the location and severity.

The best way I can say this is, "Sell the coins and cherish your memories."
