Was going through a roll of very clean 1955-S Lincolns.
First one I looked at appeared to be damaged. I set it aside and continued looking. All of them had a messy mint mark. It appears to have dirt inside all of them.
Spent some time looking at one and I believe it is the 1955-S/S/S and I have mostly an entire roll of them in what look to me as better than MS65 or better.
Then I found another one of what I thought was damaged, but now I have two of those and they both had the same issues. I ended up finding several of these and I want to ask if anyone here can tell me what I'm seeing.
Issues:
There are 2 horizontal lines coming from Lincoln's shoulder. Die cracks?
There is strong doubling on the 1955 and the S - there looks like snow caps at the bottoms of the 9 and both 5s. The 9 has something on the inside of it. In the 11 o'clock position. Doubling is apparent on all of the date - it looks like the date was repunched north and slightly east of the first date.
I see a strong spread in "IN GOD WE TRUST" and in "LIBERTY" also. But note what is under the "BE" of LIBERTY. I've stared at it and zoomed in. I have positioned the lighting differently to try and make out what it is. Multiple examples of this - exactly the same on all of them. To me, it almost looks like an "S" laying on its side. I don't see how that could be possible, but it's the only think it resembles, IMO.
What do all of you see?
Is this a known variety? I don't see one anywhere.
Varieties usually don't exist for a one-of-a-kind, do they? Is this find significant since I found multiples of it in such pristine condition?
It feels like I found something quite unique but I have no clue what it's worth.
