Now here's something I just never thought about before, until today. Whenever I see the silver price being talked about on line or on the ticker at CNBC or Fox Business, is that spot price in Troy ounces or just standard weight ounces. And if it's troy ounces, then when people talk about a pound of silver are they also talking 12 troy ounces equals one troy pound, or are they then talking a standard pound containing 16 ounces? I am so confused ......

Precious metals are measured in Troy OZ, which is the quoted spot price unit and it is 12 Troy OZ to one troy Pound

So then when we're talking about a "pound" of silver, we're really only talking about a little over 13 oz as we generally think of ounces. A pound of hamburger in troy would really only be 13 oz.

That would really be confusing at McDonalds. Give me a quarter pounder, a medium fries and a 16 oz Pepsi sounds so much better than having to say, give me that 3.1 ounce burger, a medium fries and a 13.2 oz Pepsi. Just doesn't have the same rhythm to it.

Don't be confused just be aware. Precious metals are always traded in troy ounces so every quote you see will be in troy ounces. If anyone tries to contradict that they are trying to scam you.

The pounds is a little different but the same concept. A troy pound is 12 troy ounces but silver is sometimes produced in differing "pound quantities". Giant Silver American Eagle replicas are a common example of this and may be marketed as 12 troy ounces to a pound (373 grams) or 16 adv ounces to a pound (454 grams). I haven't owned one that was 16 troy ounces but they likely exist.

If you always get a gram weight then there should be no questions, at least questions regarding the weight.

Hope this helps.
