Unsure what to make of this coin. Certainly no error expert (or novice). Can anyone help with this coin? Is this an error where a second coin did not eject properly and partially fell back into the dies to be impressed onto the next coin?

Miss the old days when I could ask Pete Bishell in person.

Thanks in advance for any information.

I see backwards ERICA from the reverse legend. Can't tell if it's raised or incuse. Looks like it's also holed. Just observing.

Not holed. The spot in question does have backwards letters from AMERICA incused o the surface.

First thing that comes to mind is that a coin was lying partially on top creating the partial incuse impression. Since it also overlaps the struck stars on the obverse, this suggests the coin was also struck (or at least partially struck) twice. Alternatively, a coin may have been partially stuck on the striking die. Better pictures with closeups would help evaluate.

With the backwards letters in the partial impression and the corresponding flatness on the rev, I think that this coin is damaged rather than being a mint error.

Here is the best that I can do with the current pics:

The flattening of the reverse would indicate that this was done post-mint.

I overlooked the fact that the reverse is flattened. vise job did cross my mind, but unusual to see that on a coin this old. I noticed that at a recent Stacks Bower auction there were a lot of colonial era coins that were double struck and with a lot of stuff like that.

Definitely PSD. If it had been struck through another coin (partial brockage, creating the incused reversed letters) the blocking cent would have prevented the stars from being struck up in that area. But the stars are there so the incused letters had to come post strike.
