The 1974-S 40% Silver Eisenhower dollar Proof shown here is very important to me.

My graded Ike set, which started with the two Ikes I got from Bobby, became the PCGS Ike set when I found this beauty at the spring coin show in 2017.

I almost missed finding it, because this particular dealer table was off to the side near the snack bar. I did not realize he was there on my first two passes. I am glad I finally did.

The image is not the best (the colour balance is off), but in hand he is fantastic and why I decided to go with PCGS for the set.

Love seeing those Ikes.

Any chance on a minor education on the different bicentennial Ike's? Thanks.

Thank you!

With that, let us take a closer look at the eight different Bicentennial Ikes.

The Ike, along with the Washington quarter and Kennedy half dollar, received a special reverse design along with the 1776-1976 dual date on the obverse. Release began in 1975, so there are no 1975 dated dollars, halves, or quarters.

We will start the show with my 1976 Eisenhower dollar Variety 1 bought from ebay in 2018. The only other MS-64 I have. In hand this coin has lovely toning and luster. It was better than any MS-65 I could find at the time, so I went for eye appeal over the label.

I mentioned there were no 1975 dated dollars, halves, or quarters. One could determine the actual mintage year of them (1975 or 1976) if they happened to be in an original mint or proof set, but this does not help for coins in the wild.

However, due to a modification to the reverse design on the Ike, it is possible to tell a 1975 from a 1976, because the modified reverse was put into use for the 1976 run of Ikes. Mint and proof sets from these years should follow this rule, but I have heard (yet never seen) packaging errors to the contrary.

This is my 1976 Eisenhower dollar Variety 2 Ike, which was purchased on ebay early summer 2018.

These two Denver Ikes are special. They are two of the four Ikes I have purchased from our very own Darth Morgan. These came to me as a pair in summer of 2018. Notice the sibling serial numbers.

Here is a bonus: My lowball Ike!

This was sent to me from our very own Nickelsearcher in late summer 2017.

At first glance, the worn state makes it look like a Variety 1, but closer inspection shows clues that it is indeed Variety 2.

The 1975 and 1976 proof sets contained Cu-Ni clad Ikes as they had for 1973 and 1974. As mentioned above, the 1975 set had Variety 1 while 1976 had Variety 2.

First up is my 1976-S Eisenhower dollar Proof Variety 1, purchased on ebay in Summer 2017.

For the Bicentennial, the three coins were issued in special sets in the same 40% silver composition used previously. There is only one variety for these, the original Variety 1 reverse.

Remember when I said that I got two Ikes from Bobby? The NGC was shown at that time, but now the PCGS makes its appearance. This is the very first PCGS Ike acquired for my set in 2016.

Closing out the bicentennial series is this 1976-S 40% Silver Eisenhower dollar Proof, purchased on ebay in the Summer of 2017.

After seeing my examples, are you able to tell the two varieties apart?
