I dont usually collect american coinage but have searched enough pennies to finally gather a small memorial collection. In organizing this in my new album I came across this oddity.. Opinions?

Nice snot rocket there, Abe. Looks like a linear plating bubble. No added value, but amusing.

Interesting, how does a plating bubble occur?

Zinc dust or other fine debris is left on the zinc planchet before it's coated with copper, which traps a tiny amount of air under the plating with it. Over time, the air reacts with the zinc causing it to corrode and separate from the copper plating.

If you take a wooden toothpick you may be able to depress one of the bubbles. This won't hurt anything. Over time the bubble(s) will deflate/separate naturally, exposing the zinc with the next step being zinc rot (which cannot be stopped). Zinc rot causes the coin to literally eat itself, destroying the coin. Not a happy ending I'm afraid.

Fairly common, but this one is in a funny position so it might be worth 2 cents.

Thanks, maybe I should keep it then. Is a linear plating bubble considered an error?

Just a common event on copper plated zinc coins. The best examples are the ones that they submit for grading that are in the high grade range. A problem coin is a, problem. Just a face value coin.
The price ranges drop quickly on these cents. MS-69 would be the only one to submit. When the cost exceeds the return for a coin, then it is a waste of money. Only the highest grades need to be submitted.
MS-69:

MS-68:

MS-66:

Just food for thought.
