Hello all.

I was recently given a 4 reales cob, apparently from a shipwreck. I suspect it has been clipped, as it weighs in at 12,13 grams and normal 4 reales cobs are north of 13 grams. My knowledge about these types of coins is very limited so I was wondering if someone here could give me some feedback on mint, assayer and approximate year.

I'm not an expert on these, but what I can say with some degree of confidence is that it was minted in Mexico City. I think yours is this type: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces14995.html

According to Numista, the F would date yours to 1607 or 1611-1614. The specific date will likely be tough to make out.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge or the right book will weigh in.

Thanks keith12 and Numisma. So the "P" would be the assayer, but how can you tell it was minted in Mexico City? I don't see anything resembling a mint-mark on it.

...I can't help chiming in here to showcase the knowledge that I had gained from the experts whilst reading Coin Community Forum posts on this topic . I believe the "Cross with Balls at the Ends" design is unique to Mexico City.
