I think I would question it. The weight sounds right but features like the second face seem to sink into the coin (as they would if it was a cast copy) when perhaps they should be better defined e.g. https://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/numisma...y/aes_grave/

The edges look filed and there is a faint seam still visible, I would question it.

@JohnConduitt - Thanks a lot for the link.
@travelcoin- Many thanks for your point of you.
I also think that the coin is some doubtful.

I have some recollection that in ancient times all Aes grave was made by casting

I also have doubts about this coin. The edge is too smooth and has file marks.

Yes, you are correct. However, the surface also leaves me to think that this was a sand casting. I don't think that was the method for casting the Aes.

In any case you can take a look at this page for referance on cast fakes:

I have never added an example of AES GRAVE to my collection, mostly because both fakes and genuine examples are cast.
However, thanks to this thread, I have gained some further valuable insight on how to determine fake from genuine.

My original 'gut' feeling was 'fake', but having read the comments of echizento and travelcoin, my inclination is to agree, and therefore my 'gut feeling has been strengthened,
especially in relation to faint signs of an edge join and almost complete removal of the edge file marks.
The link provided by JohnConduitt provides a good pictorial representation of what a genuine AES GRAVE should look like.

It seems to me that if this coin is fake, (which is now my strong inclination) then the cast has been considerably worked to hide the edge join and along with considerable effort to achieve a believable patina.

Thing is, I'd still buy it if it were at the right price. I would never be able to afford a genuine example and it's still cool looking.
