Hi everyone,

glad to have joined this forum and thanks in advance for any thoughts / comments on the following query.

I have a humble Italian 5 Lira coin from 1953 (apologies for the quality of the uploaded photos).

To my surprise, someone on ebay is selling what seems to be the exact same coin for 790 Euros (approx $960) - see link
https://www.ebay.it/itm/224302363464

Another is selling it at 650 Euros (link is too big to post)

However, the majority of other vendors on the web seem to be selling the exact same coin for around 3 or 4 Euros.

Would anyone have an idea as to the reason for this seemingly huge / bizare discrepancy? Could there have been special limited edition/series 1953 5 lira coins that are different from the standard coins? Or perhaps the ebay vendors are simply trying to 'pull a fast one'!

With thanks again in advance for any thoughts
cheers!

@jake, first welcome to CCF.

Second with respect to your question:

I'm not seeing an varieties listed on numista for the 1953 date of this coin (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces730.html) and so suspect that it is the latter reason.

It appears to be wishful thinking on the sellers' part.

Hi Spense,

thanks for the welcome and for responding to my query.

If it is the case that the ebay vendors (at least 2 value it above 600€) are trying to rip off unsuspecting buyers to that extent, then that is quite an audacious grift!

I'm quite new to the numismatic world so I probably have to get used to this type of brass neck (as we say in the UK) behaviour!

with thanks
J

It happens all the time on ebay. Just look for a British 1971 2p coin on ebay and you'll see the same thing. If you want to get an idea of the actual value of a coin, it's best to look at sold items on ebay rather than those currently on sale.

That goofball has not sold a single coin. SMall wonder

Another possible explanation is a mistake while keying in the price, but not the case for that seller, as all their stuff is overpriced by about 20,000%
