Found this today in circulation -- one of three quarters I received in a single transaction. What caught my eye first was the relatively good condition of this 45-year-old coin in the wild. Second, I noticed that most of QUARTER and part of the adjacent drum are "smeared out." Looks like a classic grease-filled die to me. There's no damage to the rest of the coin, and the rim is fully intact. Thoughts? (Sorry about the glare on the photos.)

it looks like it's showing that the grease had metal shavings as well.

The effect on the rim of the drum may be from strike weakness, instead, as I've noticed that on many bicentennial quarters and it is opposite a large high relief part of the obverse-much like Monticello's steps on nickels and the EPU area on LMCs. Nice find.

Yes,the rim on the drum is a known weak area and there might have been a bit of a gritty grease issue there as well. The quarter being in nice condition is not that unusual because a lot of people hoarded those and are now finding out they have little to no premium and are spending them now.

Thanks for the comments and happy Memorial Day to all! I'll pop this into a 2 x 2 as a reference and a conversation piece. Agreed that this coin was probably set aside for a few decades and recently made its way back into circulation.
