Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Here's a Merc as an example: Image:  tonedmerc.jpg57.55 KB I prefer a natural look and luster. Toning is easily faked. Heat, sunlight and I imagine some chemicals could produce toning. The demand is there, rainbow toning ads appear on ebay and elsewhere. How, if it's possible ,can a collecter tell AT from NT? Would you pay a premium for a toned coin? The dime is not mine, I wouldn't seek a toned coin and wouldn't pay a premium for one. PG |

Well, I for one prefer a toned coin, if I have a choice.
I think a coin that has been in an album or folder for along time would look exactly the way the picture you posted looks. My guess would be that the merc you posted has natural toning.
I heard someone on this board once reference a 100 year coin having that "natural" skin to it.
Of course everyone has different preferences, but I like toning....But I would not pay a premium for it either so I guess I am in the middle.

I certainly wouldn't pay a premium for a garishly coloured "rainbow" colour pattern. If I want coloured coins, I'll buy the modern colorized junk the Royal Canadian Mint, Perth Mint and similar mints are putting out these days. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, I my self love a nice tone it comes with the ageing of the metal. It has to do with eye appeal if the toning adds to the appearance I may pay a "Little" added premium. But I don't search them out with big bucks in hand. If you know what I mean

I for one do like a "natural" toned coin if it catches my eye,but I would not pay a premium for it because I do not know the difference between natural and artificial toning and it would take a very long time to learn and I don't want to put in the time required.

As noted already. Some like toning and some don't. I really don't like a coin with any toning at all. I prefer the coin to look as it did when firt made. There are so many people that like toned coins that there are toned coin forums. Coins are like cars. Some like one and others don't. I think that applies to wives too.

I like colorful toning on silver, but I prefer to get the endorsement of a major TPG for such coins. I'm certain that not even PCGS will always detect artificial toning, but if an attractively-toned coin is in their slab it is likely to command a premium price if and when I want to sell it. I bought this PCGS MS-64 1885-O Morgan just because of the killer reverse toning and I did pay a premium. I just wanted one really nice one and was willing to fork over the green. This is the best photo I've take so far but it doesn't capture the true brilliance of the coin.  |

I prefer natural, un-toned coins.
