Was 1788 the "good old days" or had they already passed at that point?

Looks a lot like this one, just a different date:

Gaming token, in imitation of a gold Spade Guinea- brings back memories for me. They were made in their millions.
I remember as a kid having a gold plated brass example; I have no idea of it's subsequent fate, but it did eventually inspire me to acquire a genuine Spade Guinea for my collection.

Spade Guineas were specifically mentioned and given a tariff value, in a Proclamation relating to the first officially recognized currency of the Colony of New South Wales.

Thus, they are a highly significant part of Australia's first officially recognized currency system.

Real Spade Guinea for comparison:

These tokens were popular in Victorian times, so perhaps the designers considered the 18th century to be 'the good old days', or maybe they just chose a different legend in order to avoid being accused of forgery.

It should be noted on the genuine coin that
the legend extends to the very edge of the coin.
This was done to make edge illegal filing much more difficult.
