How does post-mint-damage like a small hole punch affect grading of a coin? For example, if the coin would be VF grade but has a hole in it, does it still get a grade? Or is it essentially worthless? For example, I have an 1890 Large Cent that would be in F condition (which looks like it would sell for about $15) but has a hole punch. Is it worth $0?

A grade is not a price tag.
Some, like myself, would consider a holed coin ungradable.
That does not necessarily mean it has no value.

It's not completely worthless, but it does hurt the value a ton. Probably worth about a quarter of what an undamaged coin would be worth.

It is, essentially, worthless from a collecting standpoint. But it may just nice to keep as an oddity For your 1890, I'd think that it would be in a dealer's $1 junk bucket or maybe 6/7 for $10.

Agree value would only be a fraction of an undamaged coin, but the size of that fraction would probably depend on its rarity.

As an example, this is a scarce coin in any decent grade. I sold it for 20% of what trend value would be for a normal coin of the same grade.

I find things like that make a nice hole filler, pardon the pun. Basically an expensive coin you won't get around to filling/low importance to fill a set, but still want to complete.

I just did this with a couple silver dollar varities, was not on my radar to purchase, but picked up some cleaned dollars in a bulk purchase. Some of my Vicki's are pretty rough as well, but filled a few holes.

In short, I would not call them worthless for collecting, as the completionist in me likes to have the spaces filled. SPP'S 1875 5 CENT is a prime example, at 20%, I would consider purchasing to fill the spot and resell to someone else at a later date.

Error coins with holes tend to be much more painful... and they are irreplaceable. Imagine the value of this one, without the hole...

Here is another one I handled...
