I purchased in a auction a couple weeks back thinking it was a DDO by the picture provided by the Auction House.

But it turns out that the coin has no doubling of any kind.

Care to guess the grade against NGC?

I'm not sure how a person would tell the difference from a MS or SP

I think it depends on the specimens quite a bit. Often the surfaces of the fields or the entire coin help you determine. The rims are apparently part of the equation. Generally specimens won't have any bag marks on them as they were produced carefully and put into specimen sets. Well in theory anyways. I'll say that I myself generally can't tell the difference but I know that many can. One of the many things on my list to learn!

Here are some specimen samples I own you can compare to anyways. :)

That's actually two of them. The PCGS one is SP63RB and the ICCS graded one is SP65RD. They actually look similar to me grade-wise but PCGS is fairly well known for being tough on 1908 specimens. I might eventually collect a set in both ICCS and PCGS holders I think.

On the 1C specimens, I think PCGS is somewhat biased against the matte finish. They are very biased against any light lacquer that remains.

I own the ICCS 1908 one cent SP-67 Red. It is an amazing coin. PCGS graded it SP-64 Red.

I know the feeling. I bought the 1948 specimen 1c from the Victoria North collection, ICCS SP-67 Red. PCGS graded SP-64 Red. I am not that upset though, as I got a real deal on the coin, and I acknowledge that it is a tough one to get as a single. Most 1948 specimen coins are sold as entire sets, and with that dollar, it is brutally expensive.
