Generally speaking, I say, "no." For example, I've seen some western tokens, bearing a face value of 12 1/2 cents, that date well into the 20th century. Beyond the denomination, a number of factors come into play when estimating a token's date/era. The token's metal content, use and style must also be considered. The more tokens a collector sees and studies, the closer he can come to dating them. That said, we can all err at times.
Have to agree with exo, I believe that saloons, cigar stores used the 12 1/2 cent ones longer than general mech's. and there always seems expectations to the rules
I would agree with Exo as well. One would have to consider what was being sold as a promotion. A coat would be a much larger discount than a penny cigar for instance.
