Most likely caused by a coin-operated vending machine or wrapping machine.

Not an error, it is damage no matter what caused it.

This looks like damage from a Gumball Machine. As handle of the machine was turned, metal to coin contact sheared off the digits and left an area of displaced metal on the coin. Note that the line of damage and the metal displacement is parallel to the rim which is seen on most coins with this type of damage.

Gotta love mechanical vending machines--and coin wrapping machines too. We see these with some frequency on this forum.

PMD. I guess the good news is it was a more common-date Denver minted coin as opposed to the scarcer Philly and San Francisco minted counterparts.
