I don't know if this merits enough to be graded because it's just a $1 with an error, not a variety or a good condition gold certificate etc.

If you were to have it graded, go to http://www.pmgnotes.com/

I think it's definitely an error, and therefore keepable.

As far as grading goes, I think it's a scam usually, and wouldn't bother with it for any note -- the item is what it is and can be seen to be what it is, to me. I wouldn't feel bad about paying between $20 and $50 for such an error, but that would be taking into account the crispness (or lack thereof) of the note.

My advice: put it into a hard note holder and tuck it away for now. It's not really costing you anything to do so.

I'm not sure it's an error, looks more like it was exposed to something like bleach.

Would bleach do that only to one side? I was just given this dollar so I don't know what the story is behind it.

Bleach + Scour combination applied to cotton pad and only rubbed to one side.

They had this process of making polymer notes 1 sided by using basically the same above process and marketing them as an error.

If you want to sell it, do it. Otherwise, it's just another novelty...

elsjls welcome,
I am no pro and without seeing your note "in hand" I would lean toward bleach.Put it in a Mylar holder for now and do some more research on it,just my opinion.

Paper money errors like that are very difficult to authenticate from a photo. Being able to feel and examine the texture of the paper is important for currency. Bleaching and rubbing will disrupt the linen fibers(notes are not made of paper) of the note and should be apparent under magnification. I would say that you probably do you have an inking error but because it is less that 1/2 of a side I would not say that it is cost-effective to get entombed, it might be a $50 error but that is just a semi-educated guess. It looks like you are close to Indy so I would check the Yellow Pages there for coin shops or look here.

If going to Indy, I would reccomend LostDucthman Coins, the owner Matt is a great guy and will give you his best opinion of whether it is an error or not.
