This is one I purchased from Numismatty UK. (Thanks Matt)

I would like to know what you all would grade this half penny and whether you think it has been cleaned before. The reason I ask about the cleaning is that there are some scratches on the obverse to the left of 1806 and some scratches on the reverse from the boat and up under BRI and then back down on NIA to the water.

The scratches are very localized and therefore I question if this has been cleaned and may just be post mint damage.

Also what is the mintage on this coin and what is the KM#

Thanks,

1806-King-George-III-Half-Penny

Jim, I think it would be really hard to make a call on cleaning from the size of your pic. A closeup of the area might help.

KM# 663. Only issued with two dates, 1806 and 1807. Krause doesn't list a mintage for either year. My "Coin" Yearbook from 1982 says the mintages were "unrecorded". I guess the Brits were too busy fighting Napoleon to count their pennies.

That's a nice one! I would say about EF45 from the small pics. My gut reaction to the issue of the cleaning is that it looks rather original but may suffer from odd toning due to an improper mixing of the copper. Ultimately, better pics are needed to determine this as well.

Ok...Here are some larger pictures for grading and I have taken some pics of the obverse and reverse at an angle so you all can see the scratches better.

It's got VF written all over it - there's SOHO visible and the details of the shield next to Britannia are good too. Those letters are vulnerable to wear and I've seen very nice examples with some of them in quite low-relief so it's no biggie, however scratches are a shame and there's clear wear to the bust of mad King George so for me it's a bog-standard VF. Hmm now it feels weird I've just graded my own coin like that and I didn't think about it at the time of ownership
May I just say nice acquisition then Sir..

Hi !

This was in an old bag of coins my Dad gave me - he used to buy a few coins at a little coin shop at Wynyard Station - (Sydney) - when waiting for his train. That shop got loaaads of rail-customers.

Anyhow, when you turn the coin over the reverse is upside down. Is this normal ?

Thanks heaps, much appreciated.

Benni.
