This is a bust-type 8 reales, depicting Charles IV of SPain who ruled from 1788-1808. These types of coins were minted from 1772-1823, and they are the successor of the pillar type 8 reales or "columnario", which were minted from 1732-1772. The mintmark on your coin indicates it was minted in Mexico City mint (the Mo on the reverse). The T and H would be the assayers. THe inscription on the coin means "By the Grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies".There is an overview of SPanish Colonial reales here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spani...olonial_real

Forgot to mention that the Spanish 8 reales were a powerhouse of international trade and were legal tender in the United States until 1857.

Not sure if this is real. Obvious environmental damage at 7:30 seen on the obverse and very late die state. Can the experts weigh in?

@Westwood, I think it would help if we could see the edge of the coin.

The dots to the right of the crown (if it was correct side up) kind of look like casting.

I believe the reason why some might be questioning the authenticity of this coin is because many silver "restrikes" of these coins were made in the United States around the late 19th century to better facilitate trade with China. Some have said here in the forum that many Eastern merchants were picky one what coins they would accept for trade, with these coins with the "big old man" being the most popular. Personally, I don't see anything here that says "fake."

Awesome newguy22 thank you. I'm not planning on selling it has sentimental value but do you think it's a coin worth sending in for grading? It would be cool if it had some value and I get it certified and frame it.

I'm certainly not an expert, but I have a few of these in my collection and I don't see anything that would indicate this is fake. With regards to getting it graded, I would have to say "no" since there is quite a lot of wear on it and the mintage of these were in the millions, if not tens of millions.
