An 1857 "chain" Cent Of Sorts & Some History Linked To It

The only person of this name listed in period Baltimore City directories is George, a chainmaker. Here are my database notes on this counterstamp .... GEORGE WAS A CHAINMAKER, LISTED IN 1860 AT 291 PENNSYLVANIA AVE. AND AT 289 IN 1864. HIS NAME IS CURVED ABOVE THE STRAIGHT CITY TO FORM A LOGO. GEORGE MADE TRACE CHAINS THAT WERE USED TO TETHER ANIMALS AND SLAVES. GEORGE APPEARS IN THE 1849 & 1851 BALTIMORE DIRECTORIES AS AN IRON CHAIN MAKER. HE WAS PART OF WM. & SON IN 1845. HE WAS ABSENT FROM THE 1863-4 BUSINESS DIRECTORY BUT RETURNED IN 1865. BY 1872, HE WAS A HARDWARE DEALER, STILL ON PENNA AVE. HE'S LISTED WITHOUT AN OCCUPATION IN 1876, AND JOHN R. WHITEHOUSE NEXT APPEARS AS A CHAIN MAKER IN 1877. George won heroic recognition in the July 9, 1855 issue of The Baltimore Sun .... Report this Post to the Staff
