I posted up in another topic my Lincoln Memorial proof Cent coins I had gotten recently:
http://goccf.com/t/32990&whichpage=397#3447839

I noticed then was pointed out by others that the 'S' mint marks varied widely in size from fairly large to very tiny.
I'm going to post up the 4 coins that show this quite clearly.
My question is just this, Is this a variety of MM or some aberration that occurred during these years?

posted in order of size from large to tiny: 1986, 1981, 1984, and 1982 The mint mark not the date, which seems to be all the same apparent size.
Also noted it that the MM is moved around a bit in reference to the date.

Yep, there were 4 different mintmark styles used on the proof cents in the 1980s: http://varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20...20Styles.htm

Also, the mintmark location varies from die to die as the mintmark was added to the die by hand through 1989.

Golly, Now I have to place them under my microscope the see the different serifs.

I did know about the difference in serifs and placement, but not the huge differences in sizes from one to another

1981 was the only year that used 2 different styles (79 also but that's not in the 1980's)

The 81 mm's are quite confusing.

I get all that about the shape of the 'S' MM.
I'm more curious about why the 1986 'S' MM looks huge when compared to the 1982 's' MM which is tiny, and the 1984 and 1981 are medium when compared to the '86 and '82.
