Thanks for updating the title, jbuck. I'll stop searching the interweb for Southern Exposition + Coin Scams now. I'm far too curious to just let something like that go by-the-wayside. Thanks for saving me a day of chasing nothing but a system glitch!

Can you provide dimensions for the piece? Looks like a So-Called Dollar, but I'm not familiar with this design. There were SCDs produced for the 1883 Southern Exposition.

It's TINY. I think it's about the size of a silver III¢ piece. I know it's much smaller than a dime. I'll get it back out to check the numbers tomorrow.

Quote: It's TINY. I think it's about the size of a silver III¢ piece. Well, that rules out SCDs. I think you could eventually find out more info through online searches, may take some time. Let us know if you find out more - I'm interested in the details, too.

The 1883 Southern Exposition of Art, Industry and Agriculture , was held in Louisville, KY. It opened on August 1, 1883 - it was opened by US President Chester A. Arthur - with a plan to close after 100 days. The Exposition was so successful in drawing visitors, however, that it ran for 100 days each year during 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886 and 1887! Five years instead of one! It was designed to be a showcase for the region's agricultural base as well as for its ability to embrace technology and the future, and work with the North. 1883 Southern Exposition - Exhibition Grounds (Image Credit: Harper's Weekly, August 4, 1883. Public Domain.)The Exposition was open day and night, thanks to the installation of over 4,600 of Thomas Edison's light bulbs in the Exposition main Exhibit Hall. Many medals were issued to commemorate the Exposition. Those I'm aware of range in size from a small 15 millimeters to a fairly large 73 mm (almost three inches). Scovill Manufacturing Company, a well-known maker of coins, tokens and medals located in Waterbury, CT, struck a small (15 millimeter) bronze token of similar design for the Exposition. Maybe they produced your piece as well?. It seems like an avenue that might be worth exploring.

Fantastic bit of information, commems! I still have to get the measurements of the token, but it can't be much larger than the smallest on your list. This was one of my Dad's coins that he gave me when I started my collection. I always thought it was interesting for the large amount of detail on such a small token.
I'll do some additional research and post if I find anything.
THANKS!
