I am a newbie in collecting Canadian Silver dollars. I am having trouble distinguishing PL dollars from non PL. My experience in collecting is with Morgan dollars. About 1/2 or f the Canadian dollars I encounter have proof like fields.
Does Canadian business strike dollars (1935-1967) often have PL fields or are there just a large number of PL dollars in the United States due to collectors buying in sets.
It just seems like the number of dollars I could label PL has got to be disproportional to the number that were actually made for PL collector sets.

Most PL silver dollars are from 1960-1967, from 54-59, they were produced in increasing quantities and available in sets. In 1953, availability was somewhat random, with sets being a mix of MS, PL and SP strikes.

There is an ongoing argument as to what year PL strikes started, I havr graded PL dollars from 1949 onwards, but some feel they did not really start until early 1950's and the TPG's are wrong.

As for telling the difference, I'm still learning. One sign seems to be that PL dollars have lots of chatter on the queens shoulder. But sometimes I swear I have a Pl and it turns out to be business strike or specimen. I recently opened a 1967 Pl set and sent to ICCS for grading, most came back Specimen not PL

Many collectors, many in the US, actually HATE the designation of PL. Many of the circulation coins have great looking fields and makes people think that they are PL ... and the same goes for visa versa. MS coins are worth more PL coins, sometimes by a great deal, so some folks just forget about collecting them. Once the TPG's got a hold of the PL designation, it threw things in a tither.

The 1st thing I look for when trying to determine PL coins is the look of the finish in the fields. PL coins usually have the look of a thin layer of glass laying on the coin and usually one cannot see the grain structure from the metal flow. I believe this is due to the fact that the dies are plated, highly polished, and the coins struck with heavier pressure. The rims tend to be square similar to Specimen strikes.

Note: when PL dies wear too much they may be used in the business strike production run. Though I think that stopped since all business strikes are in Winnipeg and special strikes are in Ottawa.

I agree the fields are what I look at to determine PL/MS

Sounds like it will take some time for me to be able to determine if the dollars are "prooflike" or just "prooflike".&
I gotta say the voyager dollars are a thing of beauty in a cameo PL condition. Great design!!!
