I am hoping one of the more knowledgeable members can help with this coin, apparently from Knidos in Caria. The portrait of Aphrodite with hair bound in sphendone is typical of coins of Knidos, as is the prow on the reverse of the coin with KN(I)? above and a club below. The magistrate's name (OPONIKOΣ)(?) does appear on other coins from Knidos. I can't find another coin where Aphrodite is facing left and the prow is facing left, or a similar coin with the same diameter and weight. Could it be that the coin is not actually from Knidos? On ACSearch there are a few coins with Aphrodite and the prow facing right, others with Aprodite right and the prow left. Most don't have the club. On Wildwinds there is only one coin with Aphrodite facing right and a prow to the right. There does appear to be a club below the prow on this one though: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/gre...kman_182.jpg The coin is bronze. Diameter: 13 mm. Weight: 2.04 gr.

They certainly don't both show up facing left like this in my searches. But I think you have the right city of course. That K on top is placed there on others with the magistrate below the prow, just not in that direction often. So you might end up with a new variant. As you say you need to find an expert on Caria coinage and this city.

Thank you for the reply @louisvillekyshop. Everything is pointing to it being from Knidos, though I was beginning to have my doubts. Having much more experience than I do, it is good to know that you also think it is from that city and I am on the right track. Hopefully an expert in Caria coinage will see this and be able to identify it. In the meantime I'll keep looking. Thanks again, Jim

Seems my link is not working - the URL seems to change when I post it here, for some reason. Screenshot below.

Quote: There's one in Forum's Members' Gallery, but with a different magistrate's name. Thanks Bob. I don't know what happened, but when I follow the link I get this - "Error The selected album/file does not exist !" Oops, I see the image above now. It is a very similar coin apart from the magistrate's name. Nice one. Jim
