Can someone please help me identify what year this coin is? I know it is Japanese 5 yen and that is about it.
I tried to do some research but the symbols don't match up with anything I have been able to find.
I think it may be 19?8 but I really don't know for sure.

Yes, 5 yen, KM Y#72a. Showa year 63 (1988). Here's one explanation of reading dates on Japanese coins:

Well that article was definitely educational. Thank you very much for the help. I will definitely keep the info for future reference. I actually have multiple japanese coins so it will come in handy.

...actually, the Japanese 5 Yen coin is considered quite lucky. I remember that from my visits to Japan. Particularly good as a donation when visiting a temple.
