I had my pile of pennies to search thru & almost immediately I noticed 2 pennies that stuck out when I was sorting the pennies by year. Can someone tell me why these look this color & others of similar years look much darker. I took some pics with coins circling the "58" & "63" pennies from the years before & after those years to show the difference I am talking about. Included in those coins are 1941-42, 1946, 1951D, 1953, 1957 D, 1961, 1962 D, & 1970 S. I have a 1920 penny I was going to put in but that coin is much darker than average so it wouldn't have fit.

Just for reference here is that 1920 penny. Wow looking at it zoomed in on camera I think it might actually be 1926 not 1920. What do you guys think?

As far as your group of cents go, you're assuming they have all spent their time out in circulation. Where as the 58 and 63 may have sat in someones coin jar or collection for a lengthy period of time, which would have slowed the toning process.

They just have some mint luster. Not much added value. 58 is a common date and the memorial are easy to obtain in good grades.

Nothing special on the color, just hasn't seen much circulation.

The brighter ones are just newer. Date on early cent looks like 1926.

Each year can look different on the last digit, but all that year will have the same last digit as they are created from one master hub. The exceptions of this will be the years with the large and small date issues. So just compare coins of the same year. If you compared ares as being different from year to year. That is true. There is a difference. But to make a hasty decision about being different from year to year, things change.

New master hubs are created from time to time. So the best way to compare coins is of the same year/denominations/mints/types.
